There are nine key sections required in your Materials Technology folder . Each one is outlined below.

3rd Yr Junior Cert Brief
1. Cover Page – Exam number & photo of finished project
2. Design brief – Highlight key words on the brief
3. Analysis of brief – look at the design brief. Pick out the key words/points. Discuss and elaborate on these.
4. Research & Investigation – Research possible solutions to your chosen brief (project) i.e. look at stool designs currently on the market.
Research must include:
Internet – pictures. Comment on each.
Magazines/cataloges – cut out pictures. Comment on each.
Photographs – take photographs of stools. Comment on each.
Measurement – Measure existing solutions to your brief i.e. the size of a standard stool/ size of person who will use the stool. Include typical sizes using sketches. You can then base the size of your design on these.
Research on possible materials avalible – Show using pictures and notes 2 or 3 materials which would be suitable for project i.e. MDF, pine, oak. Comment on properties of each material and their suitability/availability.
Joints – Research possible joints which could be used i.e. commonly used joints for a stool are M & T, Bridle joint, dowel etc. Show a picture or sketch of each and comment.
5. Possible solutions – 3 possible solutions to the design brief. Use a full plank A4 page for each sketch. Label all parts of sketch. Give 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages for each solution.
Smaller sketches explaining how a possible solution will work, its development etc may also be included on the sheet or on a seperate sheet. Lightly shade each sketch with colouring pencils only.
6. Final Solution – Detailed labelled coloured sketch of your final solution (the project you will make). List the advantages only of the solution. Make more detailed sketches of important elements of the project.
7. Working Drawing – Plan, elevation and end view (orthographic projection) of your project. Include all important measurements. Include any templates used here.
8. Cutting list – List of sizes of all materials used
9. Evaluation –
Project – Did you furfill the brief requirements
What you liked about the project?
What you didn’t like about the project?
What changes you would make if you were to make it again?
What you learned by making the project? i.e skills knowledge of tools/joints etc
Time management – Did it take long than you thought?
Cost – Break down of cost of making the project
Finish(varnish) – Did you do a good job of sanding?
Did you chose the correct finish i.e paint/varnish/satin/gloss/water based
